WHAT IS THE

The Home Builders Association of Western Michigan (HBA) presents the Kalamazoo Attainable Homes Partnership (KAHP) in cooperation with Kalamazoo Neighborhood Housing Services (KNHS) and Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC).

The KAHP seeks to provide high-quality homes built by HBA members that are both attainable in cost and provide the homeowners with low maintenance costs. KAHP homes feature the same quality construction that goes into many custom homes, such as 50-year roofing, energy saving insulation and heating and air conditioning systems, durable flooring materials and so much more – saving families in these homes thousands a year in utilities bills and maintenance for generations to come.

One of the unique efforts that made KAHP possible was the collaborative design by a number of HBA builders working together to integrate the most efficient design possible.  For example, in the two-story plan, the bathrooms are stacked above and below each other and near kitchen walls for minimal plumbing materials.

On the narrow city lots we’re building on, we limited the width of the home to the maximum span for a floor joist, eliminating the need for a supporting wall across the basement.  Nowhere in these plans did the HBA sacrifice quality over cost.  By partnering with our member suppliers, we have access to high-quality materials at discounted pricing.

It’s the HBA’s goal to bring new homes to neighborhoods that haven’t seen new construction in decades. We’re so proud to be working with our partner organizations to make new home ownership equitable throughout Kalamazoo – building new homes that will serve families for generations.

WHY IS THE HBA INVOLVED WITH KAHP?

The KAHP aligns with our mission and expands our reach into neighborhoods where we haven’t been engaged in many years. We can change lives and have a positive long-term impact in these neighborhoods while providing opportunities for our members.

  • The HBA should be known as a significant partner in the economic growth of Kalamazoo and throughout Western Michigan.

  • With a high level of media and PR exposure, we will increase the number of homeowners in Kalamazoo who will  “THINK HBA FIRST” when they’re looking to maintain, upgrade, remodel or build a new home.

  • Enhance our workforce development programs by providing a ‘living lab’ for students and individuals looking to enter the skilled trades and residential construction. From our Minority Contractors license program with the City of Kalamazoo, to local CTE students, and MCTI pre-apprentice certificate students and other programs, the KAHP can provide valuable hands on experience.
